Welcome back to class! Did you enjoy your LOOOOONG Thanksgiving break?
Today please practice writing in past tense and negative past tense on your blog: 1) What are some things you did during break? 2) What are some things you didn't do during break, because of the snow?
For example:
I watched the hummingbirds in our yard. My husband fed them sugar water, and they came every morning and evening. They seem so small and delicate, but they survived the freezing weather and snow. They are amazing! Because of the snow I couldn't drive, and I walked to the store. It took almost an hour each way, but it was fun. What else did I do? I slept a lot!
THURSDAY: After you practice typing and pronunciation, TAKE A WHITE HOUSE TOUR HERE: white house tour. Which room do you like best?
Wednesday: Today you can try pronunciation practice at Pronunciaton Practice Try to do 3 a day! Also practice typing. Last but not least, spellingcity.com/lizfalconer! There are words from the Obama reading. Tuesday: Typing practice: Type one page of the Obama story in your blog.

This is going to be a very busy quarter! Today, please see how fast you can type! Later in the quarter, you can check how much you have improved.

TODAY:
Do you think it is easy to spend too much in the US? What are good ways to avoid spending too much?
Here are some of my ideas:
I love shopping for clothes. Sometimes, when I have been shopping a lot, I give myself a "mall break." I don't go to the mall. Instead, I take a walk or call a friend. I tell myself I need to wait at least two weeks before I go to the mall. Also, I stop and take a look in my closet and drawers, and try to find something that I haven't worn for a long time. That is a good way to remind myself about how much I ALREADY HAVE!
Another way I avoid overspending is to only buy things on sale. If I see something I like, I know that if I wait, it will usually go on sale later.
TYPE at least one paragraph from the "Spending too much" story on your blog.
Here is a conversation site to look at with a partner too: Focus English
I am interested to see if it works on our computers. Please try it out!
There are other games at that site to explore too.... GOOD LUCK!
Today is President Obama's Birthday. He is also announcing the 2010 Citizens Medal.
You can see the results at this link: 2010 Citizenship Medal.
We will be discussing today in class: What is a good citizen?
What do you like about summer? Please write about it in your blog.
Here is Liz's example:
I love summer! One of my favorite things about summer is the long days. When I finish work at 9:00 it is still light out. Then, I can take a walk. On weekends I sit outside and enjoy the cool summer breeze in the evenings. I also feel grateful for the sunshine we have - it lifts my spirits. On weekends, I can easily spend time outside near lakes or in the mountains. Summer in Seattle is not too hot and not too cold. I feel lucky to live here.
Today, use SPELLING CITY to write at least 10 original sentences with words from Grade One or Two. (Use "Sentence Writing Practice" in Games.) Then, put them on your blog.
Ask Liz if you need help!
It is hard to believe that July is almost over...and we finally have some sunshine to enjoy, too.
This weekend, I found a FANTASTIC NEW SPELLING SITE! You can hear the words, hear each one used in a sentence, play various games, and be tested on the words. It is the best spelling site I have ever seen. I transferred our "Spelling by Grade" lists there. You can visit the site: SPELLING CITY
Today, please visit the site. If you have finished Grade One, then start work on Grade Two.
Go to the site, Click "Find a List" and then "Find by Teacher." Enter my name, Liz Falconer. Our class lists will pop up, and you can choose one. There are 3 options for each list: TEACH, TEST, and GAMES. Today please choose "TEACH." It will give you each word, with a sentence.
LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES!
What did you do last weekend? Write about it, using past tense verbs. Here is Liz's example:
I had a very relaxing weekend. On Friday evening, I went to Renton River Days. There was a great band there playing jazz music. On Saturday, I went out to dinner at the Landing with my husband. We ate sushi at a new Japanese restaurant. It was pretty good, but a little expensive. On Sunday I stayed home and cleaned, dusted, and picked up the house. In the evening, we saw "The Bourne Identity," an action movie. Even though I have seen it before, I enjoyed it.

Today's writing: Work on the spelling test words and get tested on First Grade if you are ready.

Today's technical challenge: POST the photo of yourself at the computer in your blog. If you put it in a "gadget," then you will see it easily. Ask me to help you if you need it. Recent photos are in the slideshow here:
What do you look like? Who do you look like, your mother or father, or both? Compare yourself to people in your family.
Here is Liz's description of herself:
I have curly hair. When I was young, I hated my curls. Now, I have grown to like them. I have three sisters, and I am the tallest and the oldest. Two of my younger sisters have wavy hair, and one has straight hair. Our faces look alike, but they are much shorter than me. My father is tall and had black, wavy hair...but now it is gray. My mother is in her 70's but she doesn't have any gray hair. I am taller than my mom.
MONDAY: LOOK AT YOUR COMMENTS!! Please check your posts and make the changes I suggested. (If you didn't do last week's assignment, please write it now in your blog.)

When it rains, I try to cheer myself up. Sometimes I make hot chocolate. Sometimes I watch a movie. Sometimes I read a book and listen to the sound of the rain on the roof. What do you do when it rains?
